1st 2015 Democratic Presidential Debate

12:03 - Finished work obligations and sped through the last few minutes of the debate.  My thoughts- still don't like or trust Hillary.  Have more respect for Bernie Sanders despite his avowed socialist views.  Found him to be the most moderate on things like gun control and foreign policy.  Didn't like some of the candidates calling out the NRA as their favorite enemy.  I am pro-guns, but sometimes think the NRA takes it to far.  Nevertheless, I think talking about meaningful change is all empty words when you call large organizations like this out as your "enemy".  I like Jim Webb, but he's gotta practice a bit more and not get so whiney when they don't give him time.  I also think Anderson Cooper was going after some candidates much harder than others, particularly the less established ones.

21:48 - Aaand a work call- oh great no more watching the debate for me:-/

21:42 - Stuck it to Republicans by saying how they're anti-big government until it comes to abortion.  That's kind of an unfair criticism as they see it as a moral issue.  Why is it ok for climate change to be a "moral issue" but not something as serious as abortion?  I'm not arguing against it here, but merely posing the question.  Maybe we shouldn't be debating the morality of this issues- rather we should focus on better solutions to mitigate problems related to both.

21:37 - Webb is more for the world dealing with climate change together as a world (particularly China and India)- not just the U.S. absorbing the entire responsibility.  Is not for quickly pushing the U.S. out of fossil fuels.

21:36 - O'Malley wants to order that we are on a 100% green electric grid by 2050.  I like how smooth this guy is, but he is very pie in the sky which most of his ideas so far.

21:25 - Jim Webb states that he'd be more for working through the congressional process rather than overusing executive privilege the way the Obama administration has.

21:22 - Candidates seem to be fairly uniform on Edward Snowden needing to face justice but differ on whether he should be ruled a criminal or face stiff consequences.

21:13 - Sanders will tax the wealthy so much that Social Security will be solvent through 2061- big whoop.  What's the point of a fix that still doesn't fix the problem for a decent length of time?  Social Security is not sustainable and needs a much bigger overhaul than just taxing the heck out of rich people.  Taxes probably do need to be raised, but more needs to be done to make the system solvent and sustainable for at least the next 150 years.  A lot could happen between now and then, but politicians are almost as short sighted as most business executives are these days.

21:12 - Clinton wants to "enhance" the benefits for the lowest income, most in need individuals in the Social Security system.  Deftly avoided using the word "expand" as mentioned by the CNN anchor.  She wants to expand it- no question.

More after the break...

21:11 - Clinton wants students with free education to work

21:06 - Jim Webb needs to stop being whiney on debate rules- granted they're BS.  The various candidates definitely aren't getting equal times or being held to the same standard.  One of the unfortunate side effects of televised debates that are also about making money for their respective news networks.

21:03 - Clinton must have been practicing with her husband before this debate.  She's gotten pretty good at deflecting- he's still the master of it.  I may not agree with his politics, but my gosh do I still admire that guy's chops as a master politician.

20:57 - Clinton says we have a better economy under a Democratic administration.  ??I seriously question that.  Politicians always talk about the economy being driven by the Presidential office- that's BS.  Generally, a President is either living off the good fortunes or disasters caused simply by current market conditions or by the actions of their predecessors.  Yes, they can effect change themselves, but its so annoying that they always take full credit for the good times but never the bad times.

20:53 - Clinton says we need a "New" New Deal to address problems of poverty and education that are a large part of the racial inequality problem.

20:51 - Candidates discussing whether or not black lives matter.

20:50 - Clinton says "no" she doesn't want to respond to Chaffee's comments.
20:49 - Chaffee defends Americans right to know about Clinton's e-mails given the recent history of American's being duped by politicians.

20:48 - Sanders says Americans are sick of hearing about Clinton's e-mails.  Did a good job of taking Clinton's side while making a good point of his own.

20:47 - Clinton on the defensive about Benghazi and e-mails.  Feels like the committee investigating her is unfairly targeting her and spending too much tax-payer money to go after her.

20:41 - Greatest crises facing the nation - the Middle East, Global Warming, and cyber warfare...

20:38 - Sanders defending his choices on being a conscientious objector regarding Vietnam War.  He says that he is not a pacifist and did not object to the military but tor reasons for entering the war.

20:34 - Clinton defending the Obama administration's decision on Libya.  A lot of politician speech that really didn't make much of a point that justifies the decisions.

20:29 - Clinton seems to be the only one who believes in a Syrian no-fly zone which would require a stronger U.S. and world presence to maintain.  Per O'Malley, would result in an escalation with Russia.

20:28 - O'Malley gave it to legislators for getting railroaded by polling and war fever into the Iraq conflict.  Good to hear someone blaming legislators as much as President Bush for getting us into the blunder known as Iraq.

20:26 - Sanders does not believe in U.S. unilateral action.

20:24 - Chaffee really going after Clinton and questioning her judgment regarding her foreign policy advice on our current engagements.

20:23 - Sanders emphatically does not support ground troops in the "quagmire" that is Syria.  Called Iraq war "worst mistake in U.S. history".

20:20 - Liked the focus on gun control, but glad they're switching to foreign policy.

20:17 - O'Malley and Sanders are really going after each other- I like this.  Will admit I have more respect for Sanders now.

20:15 - Bernie wants to close gun show loop holes, expand health care support, and focus more on getting guns out of the hands of criminals.

20:14 - Hillary's definitely taking a much stronger stance on gun controls and wants people to take on the NRA.

20:13 - I feel Bernie Sanders is actually outlining a pretty reasonable gun policy that looks at strengthening gun laws without going overboard.

20:07 - Seems like Anderson Cooper was targeting Lincon Chaffee a bit harder than the other candidates.  He made a good point about why he had to change his party, but still faltered a bit.  I actually like this guy ok, but I don't see him being able to hack it unless he turns things around soon.

20:00 - Anderson asks Hillary why she's been such a flip-flopper.  Interesting- she just "absorbs" new information and changes her mind.  I mean I have nothing against taking new evidence into consideration and changing one's mind but these politicians can be so sickening going way to the extreme and magically coming back to center before a general election.  Definitely not a problem specific to Hillary- want to be clear on that.

19:57 - Hillary Clinton came on and definitely had the best spoken opening so far, but I'm obviously still not a fan.

19:54  - Martin O'Malley came on and had a little bauble, but was otherwise pretty smooth.  Personally, interested in learning a bit more about him.  I've always said that if I did vote for a Democrat, he'd most likely be a smooth talking Southerner.  Can't wait to see what he has to say..

19:49 - Jim Webb definitely pulls off the common guy politician thing pretty well, but still went on a bit long on his entire family history and it just seemed a bit too hokey.  I'm just a bit tired of politicians going on and on about how hard their lives were growing up and how they're more "common" than everyone else
